Qatar Backs Libya Diplomatic Push In Meeting With General Haftar

Qatar has formally pledged its support for ongoing efforts to resolve the deep political divisions in Libya. Lolwah Al-Khater, the Qatari Minister of State for International Cooperation, travelled to the eastern city of Benghazi to meet with Khalifa Haftar, the commander of the Libyan National Army. The high-profile delegation discussed security, humanitarian assistance, and pathways toward national reconciliation. This visit marks a notable diplomatic shift given past tensions between Doha and the eastern Libyan administration.

Libya has remained divided between competing administrations in the east and west since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising. Doha historically backed the UN-recognised government in Tripoli, which put it at odds with Haftar's eastern-based forces. The recent engagements reflect a broader regional trend of reconciliation as Gulf nations seek to secure their economic and political interests. Qatar aims to play a constructive mediation role to stabilize North Africa.

Global energy markets closely monitor Libyan stability due to the nation's significant crude oil reserves. Disruptions in Libyan oil output frequently trigger volatility in global energy prices, which directly impacts India as a major oil importer. Successful diplomatic efforts would stabilize oil supplies and lower import bills for Indian oil marketing companies. While India maintains neutral diplomatic ties, it supports UN-led political processes to restore order in the region.
