Punjab Rural Jobs: 14 Lakh MGNREGA Workers Deleted From Rolls

Data submitted to the Lok Sabha reveals that over 14 lakh workers and eight lakh job cards under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act were deleted in Punjab over the last five years. The central government conducted this large-scale exercise as part of a nationwide drive to clean up rural employment registries. The deletions targeted individuals deemed ineligible, deceased, or those holding duplicate cards across various districts in the state.

The Union Ministry of Rural Development has been pushing for Aadhaar-based payment systems and mandatory geo-tagging to ensure financial transparency. Officials state that the removal of these names is a necessary step to prevent the siphoning of public funds meant for genuine beneficiaries. This cleanup follows several social audits and technical evaluations that highlighted the existence of ghost workers and administrative discrepancies in the implementation of the flagship rural employment scheme.

While the government frames the move as a corrective measure, some social activists express concern over the potential exclusion of vulnerable workers who may have lacked proper documentation. The deletion of 14 lakh names represents a significant shift in Punjab’s rural labor landscape. Future monitoring will focus on whether genuine workers can re-enroll and how this streamlined database affects the timely disbursement of wages, which remains a critical challenge for the rural economy.
