Punjab Becomes First State to Mandate AI Education From Class 1 to 12

Punjab has officially launched the Sarbat.AI initiative, making it the first Indian state to integrate Artificial Intelligence as a core subject across all school grades from Class 1 to 12. Announced by School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, the program is designed to reach approximately 3.15 million students across more than 25,000 government and PSEB-affiliated schools. This comprehensive rollout aims to equip the next generation with foundational digital literacy and advanced computational thinking skills necessary for a rapidly evolving global economy.

The curriculum will be introduced in two distinct phases to ensure pedagogical effectiveness. The first phase focuses on integrating AI concepts directly into the existing Computer Science curriculum for students in Classes 8 to 12. The second phase will subsequently introduce age-appropriate AI learning modules for students in Classes 1 to 7, emphasizing the development of digital skills through interactive and simplified content. This structure is intended to build a progressive learning path that evolves with the student's cognitive development.

This state-level initiative aligns with the broader national strategy to modernize school education, mirroring the Central Board of Secondary Education's plans to introduce AI from Class 3 onwards starting in the 2026-27 academic year. By prioritizing AI education, Punjab aims to bridge the digital divide and prepare its youth for technology-driven career paths. The move reflects a growing consensus among policymakers that early exposure to AI is essential for maintaining national competitiveness in the global digital landscape.
