Pune BJP Corporator Denies Foot-Washing Allegations At School Event

A political storm has erupted in Pune after photographs from a Guru Purnima event at a local school surfaced online. Opposition leaders alleged that students were made to wash the feet of BJP corporator Varsha Sathe during the ceremony. The images, which circulated widely on social media, drew sharp criticism from rival political factions who described the act as regressive and an inappropriate use of school children for political glorification. The incident has sparked a debate on the boundaries of religious rituals within educational institutions.

Varsha Sathe has strongly denied the allegations, characterizing the event as a 'Matru Puja' (worship of the mother figure). She clarified that the children were participating in a traditional ceremony where 'haldi-kumkum' (turmeric and vermilion) was applied to the feet of elders as a mark of respect. Sathe maintained that the photos were being misinterpreted by political opponents to tarnish her image and the reputation of the school. She emphasized that no student was forced into any act and that the event was organized to instill traditional values in the younger generation.

The opposition has demanded an inquiry by the municipal corporation and the education department into the conduct of the event. They argue that such rituals, even if voluntary, promote a culture of subservience that is contrary to modern educational standards.
