Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir Polls Spark Violent Clashes And Crackdown

The legislative assembly of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir has headed to polls in a three-phase election running from July 27 to August 10, amid violent protests and clashes that have left at least 20 people dead and several injured at the hands of security forces. Primarily led by the banned civil society coalition Joint Awami Action Committee, the ongoing demonstrations reflect widespread public anger over severe economic hardship, political disenfranchisement, and restrictions on civil liberties in the region.

The intense civil unrest stems from a total breakdown of local governance, an economic blockade causing critical shortages of subsidized wheat and medicines, and heavy load shedding despite massive local power generation. Protesters are strongly opposed to the 12 legislative assembly seats reserved for non-residents, a mechanism critics argue allows the federal government in Islamabad to plant loyalists and dilute genuine local representation.

New Delhi maintains that PoK is an integral part of India under illegal occupation, with the Ministry of External Affairs stating that the unrest is a direct consequence of decades of systemic exploitation and administrative repression by Pakistan. Meanwhile, the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner has called for prompt and impartial investigations into all deaths resulting from the unrest as security forces continue to crack down on civil rights activists.
