Panna Labourers Strike Fortune with 17-Carat Diamond Discovery

A group of labourers, including a local tea vendor, have struck a massive fortune in the diamond-rich district of Panna, Madhya Pradesh. They unearthed a high-quality rough diamond weighing approximately 16.18 to 17 carats. The stone was discovered in a shallow mine in the Krishna Kalyanpur area after heavy rains washed away the top layer of soil, making the gem visible to the workers. The labourers immediately deposited the precious stone at the local Diamond Office as per state regulations. This find is considered one of the most significant in the region over the past year.

Experts at the Panna Diamond Office have initially valued the stone at over ₹50 lakh (approximately $52,400). The diamond is of high clarity and will be put up for public auction in the coming months. According to government rules, the proceeds from the auction will be distributed among the labourers after deducting a 12.5% royalty and other applicable taxes. The discoverers, who live in modest conditions, have expressed their joy, stating that the money will be used to improve their families' lives, settle debts, and fund their children's education.

Panna is the only district in India with a functional diamond mine and a unique system where individuals can lease small patches of land to search for gems. This latest discovery has sparked a renewed interest among local residents and small-scale miners in the area. Historically, Panna has produced several high-value diamonds, but a find of this magnitude is relatively rare. Moving forward, the district administration expects a surge in lease applications as the news of the ₹50 lakh find spreads across the state, potentially boosting local employment in the traditional mining sector.
