Ousted Ukraine Defense Minister Calls For Wartime Elections

Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's recently dismissed former defense minister, called for wartime presidential elections on August 18, 2026. This move creates the most direct political challenge to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022. Fedorov argued in a video address that democracy cannot remain on hold and that voting rights must be restored for soldiers and displaced citizens.

Fedorov's demand follows his abrupt sacking by President Zelenskyy in July 2026 after a reported falling out with military commander Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi. Although Syrskyi was subsequently removed under public pressure, Fedorov remained out of office. The former defense minister criticized the current administration for administrative corruption and prioritizing personal loyalty over professional competence in key appointments.

President Zelenskyy formally nominated Yevhen Khmara to permanently assume the defense minister post on the same day Fedorov issued his election call. While Ukrainian law currently prohibits elections under martial law, recent polling indicates Fedorov would comfortably defeat Zelenskyy in a potential runoff vote if legal mechanisms change.
