Speaker Recognises Rebel Shiv Sena Merger Into Eknath Shinde Fold

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has approved the merger of six rebel Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs with the Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. This official recognition expands the Eknath Shinde-led party's strength to 13 members in the Lower House, while simultaneously reducing the Shiv Sena (UBT) presence to three MPs. The decision, announced ahead of the upcoming Parliament Monsoon session, solidifies the internal realignment within the political group.

The move comes amidst wider instability within opposition blocs, notably within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Separate seating has been ordered for 20 rebel TMC MPs who previously announced their intention to merge into the regional Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI). However, the formal recognition of the NCPI merger remains pending with the Speaker. Opposition parties have staged walkouts during all-party meetings to protest the treatment of these rebel factions, accusing the government of facilitating shifts for political leverage.

These realignments impact the broader legislative landscape as the NDA, led by the BJP, currently holds 298 seats in the Lok Sabha. The potential inclusion of the TMC rebel faction into the NCPI, if approved, could boost NDA support to 318 seats. This shifting mathematics fuels speculation regarding the government's plans to reintroduce significant legislation, including the proposed increase in total Lok Sabha seats and reservation policies. Observers anticipate intense debates during the Monsoon session as the government eyes the two-thirds majority mark required for major constitutional amendments.
