OpenAI is reportedly developing a portable, screenless smart speaker as its first consumer hardware product. Described internally as an "AI-native computer," the device aims to move beyond traditional command-based smart speakers by acting as a proactive, human-like companion. Reports indicate the design will feature mechanical components that allow for movement or directional flexibility, helping the assistant feel present and responsive as it helps users manage smart-home appliances, play media, and respond to various notifications.

The device is built to integrate deeply with GPT-Live, the voice-first mode of ChatGPT, emphasizing a natural conversational experience. Unlike current market leaders that remain tethered to power sources, this upcoming speaker is expected to include a rechargeable battery, enhancing its portability throughout a household. The design effort is reportedly shaped by the studio LoveFrom, founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, focusing on a minimal and intuitive form factor that eschews a display in favor of voice and AI interaction.

This smart speaker represents the first in a broader family of planned AI-powered devices, with a prospective launch window in 2027. By focusing on a companion model rather than a smartphone or tablet, OpenAI is attempting to carve out a unique niche in the AI hardware market.
