Odisha Approves Subhadra Yojana Offering Rs 50000 to Women

The Odisha government under Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has officially approved the Subhadra Yojana, a flagship initiative for women's economic empowerment. Eligible female residents will receive a total financial assistance package of Rs 50,000 distributed over a period of five years. Funds are disbursed in annual installments of Rs 10,000, broken down into two equal semi-annual payments of Rs 5,000 timed around Rakhi Purnima and International Women's Day, targeting over one crore women across the state.

The scheme fulfills a key electoral promise made by the Bharatiya Janata Party during the 2024 assembly elections. To ensure benefits reach disadvantaged households, strict eligibility criteria apply for women between the ages of 21 and 60. Wealthy individuals, government employees, income tax payers, and recipients of larger government grants are excluded. Payments utilize a Direct Benefit Transfer system linking Aadhaar cards directly to bank accounts to eliminate leakages.

Beyond financial relief, the program aims to improve family health, education, and nutrition while fostering entrepreneurial independence among female self-help groups. Registration is conducted through local service centers across the state, encouraging formal banking inclusion. The massive undertaking represents one of the largest gender-specific cash transfer schemes in India, drawing attention from other state administrations as a model for social security.
