NPCI to Launch Cross-Border UPI Payment Gateway with Bhutan

The National Payments Corporation of India is set to launch a new cross-border payment gateway with Bhutan, further expanding the reach of India's digital payment infrastructure. This initiative, expected to go live by late August 2026, will facilitate seamless real-time transactions between India and Bhutan, leveraging the Unified Payments Interface framework. The new gateway aims to boost trade, tourism, and remittances between the two nations by providing a secure and efficient digital payment channel.

This development follows NPCI's consistent efforts to globalize India's digital payment ecosystem. The expansion into Bhutan is expected to benefit Indian tourists and businesses operating in the Himalayan nation, offering them the convenience of UPI for everyday transactions. Cross-border integration eliminates currency exchange frictions and reduces transaction settlement times, fostering closer economic ties across neighboring South Asian economies.

Additionally, the Reserve Bank of India is reportedly exploring further collaborations with other neighboring countries to integrate UPI for cross-border payments, solidifying India's position as a leader in digital payment innovation. Technical teams from both nations are completing final security audits to ensure seamless interoperability prior to the official late August rollout, marking another milestone for India's homegrown digital public infrastructure.
