Nicaragua Ortega Moves to Extend Term and Ban Opposition Traitors

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega submitted a draft constitutional reform to Congress to exclude opposition members labeled as traitors or coup-plotters from future elections. The proposed legislation also seeks to extend the presidential term from six to seven renewable years. The reform officially consolidates executive power over opposition groups ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.

Daniel Ortega has overseen a multi-year crackdown on political dissidents, media outlets, and civil society organizations across Nicaragua. Authorities previously stripped citizenship from prominent critics and banned key political parties following anti-government protests. The latest reform formalizes existing state measures used to disqualify political rivals from seeking office.

The draft bill expected to pass through the government-controlled National Assembly will further isolate Managua internationally. While direct trade between India and Nicaragua remains modest, New Delhi monitors political stability in Central America to safeguard its diplomatic and commercial footprint in Latin America. Global human rights bodies are preparing formal condemnations against the proposed changes.
