Namgyal Urges PM Modi to Reopen Demchok Kailash Route

Senior BJP leader and former Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, has formally urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps toward reopening the historic Demchok route in Eastern Ladakh. Namgyal’s request seeks to designate Demchok as an official route for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a significant religious pilgrimage for Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists. The former MP highlighted that the reopening of this route would not only fulfill a long-standing demand of devotees but also boost the local economy of the border regions.

The Demchok route is historically recognized as one of the shortest and easiest paths from India to Mount Kailash in Tibet. Unlike the arduous treks required via the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand or the Nathu La Pass in Sikkim, the Demchok path offers a relatively more accessible terrain for pilgrims. However, the route has remained largely closed for official pilgrimage due to sensitive border issues and the ongoing geopolitical tensions between India and China in Eastern Ladakh. Namgyal emphasized that the reopening would signal a return to normalcy and strengthen India’s presence in its border territories.

If the central government moves forward with this proposal, it would require significant diplomatic coordination with Chinese authorities. Reopening the route would drastically reduce the travel time and physical strain for elderly pilgrims who currently face extreme weather and high-altitude challenges on alternate paths. Additionally, it would provide a massive stimulus to the 'Vibrant Villages' program by creating tourism-linked livelihoods for residents of Eastern Ladakh. The proposal comes at a time when India is focusing heavily on developing border infrastructure to ensure better connectivity for both civilian and strategic purposes.
