Three Arrested After Custodial Death Of Shopkeeper In Nagercoil

Tamil Nadu authorities have arrested three prison officials, including Chief Head Warden Thirumalai Nambi Suresh, following the death of 35-year-old grocery shop owner Sabarivarman in Nagercoil sub-jail. Sabarivarman, who was physically disabled, died on July 13 after being arrested on July 9 for allegedly selling banned gutka. While initial prison reports claimed he died of cardiac arrest, a post-mortem conducted in the presence of a District Judge revealed 19 injuries, including a fractured right arm, suggesting he was subjected to severe physical assault in custody.

The incident has sparked widespread protests, with the victim's family refusing to accept his body until their demands for a CBI probe, compensation, and a government job are met. Opposition leaders, including Udhayanidhi Stalin, have heavily criticized Chief Minister Vijay, who also holds the Home portfolio, for his continued silence on the issue.
