Political Row Erupts Over PM Modi's Dimagi Naxal Remark

Prime Minister Narendra Modi sparked a major political debate during his 80th Independence Day address from the Red Fort on August 15, 2026. He warned the nation about 'dimagi Naxals' or intellectual Naxals, whom he described as a 'new enemy' entrenched within the system. The Prime Minister alleged that these individuals pose a significant threat to social harmony and national progress. This address marked a shift in rhetoric, focusing on internal ideological challenges alongside traditional security threats.

Following the speech, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju offered a four-point definition of the term to clarify the government's stance. Rijiju stated that the label applies only to those who support Maoist ideologies or separatist movements, rather than general political opposition. However, Congress leader P. Chidambaram hit back at the remark, stating he was 'proud to be a dimagi Naxal' if it meant standing up for dissent. The CPI(M) also criticized the label, calling it an overt attempt to suppress democratic dissent and label critics as anti-nationals.

While the BJP maintains that identifying intellectual support for extremism is necessary for national security, the Congress and Left parties view it as a tool for political targeting.
