Xbox Disc-to-Digital Program: Microsoft Plans Physical Game Migration

Microsoft is developing a Disc-to-Digital program to help users transition physical game collections into digital libraries. A leaked roadmap reveals that users can insert supported Xbox One or Series X discs into consoles with optical drives to grant a permanent digital license. This license connects to both the user account and the specific disc. It allows gamers to play their titles across supported Xbox devices and handhelds without needing the physical disc. The roadmap targets October 2026 for a major push involving original Xbox games on PC.

Microsoft has designed the system to address potential resale loopholes by ensuring digital entitlements transfer when a disc changes hands. If a disc is sold or traded, the previous owner loses digital access while the new owner gains it. Publisher participation in the program remains optional, meaning game companies will decide which titles qualify for conversion. Some publishers may charge a fee for digitizing certain games, while others might opt out entirely. The program currently requires a disc-drive console to initiate the initial conversion process.

The leaked documents suggest that these digitized games are being prepared for Microsoft's next-generation hardware, currently codenamed Project Helix. This move follows Sony's reported plan to phase out physical discs for new PlayStation releases starting in early 2028.
