Tennessee Jury Hears Claims Meta Ignored Internal Research on Teen Harm

The state of Tennessee has presented its opening arguments to a jury, alleging that Meta Platforms Inc. deliberately ignored its own internal research regarding the harm its platforms cause to teenagers. The lawsuit, spearheaded by Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti, claims that the social media giant was aware of the addictive nature and negative mental health impacts of Instagram but chose to prioritize user engagement and profit over safety. This case is part of a broader legal push by multiple U.S. states to hold tech companies accountable for the youth mental health crisis.

Central to the lawsuit is the demand for significant changes to how Instagram operates. The state is seeking not only substantial financial penalties but also a court order that would force Meta to modify specific features of the platform. These include algorithmic recommendations and push notifications that critics argue are designed to maximize time spent on the app at the expense of well-being. Prosecutors argue that the company's internal documents prove they understood these features were particularly harmful to the developing brains of younger users.

As Meta's largest market by user volume, India is highly sensitive to the outcome of this U.S. litigation. The Indian government has already expressed concerns over the safety of children on social media and is currently strengthening its Digital India Act and IT Rules to address such issues. If a U.S. jury rules against Meta and forces platform-wide changes, those modifications would likely be applied globally, including to millions of Indian teenagers.
