MeitY Unveils India AI Governance Guidelines To Ensure Responsible Tech Adoption

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has officially launched the India AI Governance Guidelines, a strategic framework designed to foster the safe and inclusive deployment of artificial intelligence across the nation. Unveiled on July 24, 2026, by Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, the policy aims to standardize ethical practices for AI developers and corporate entities operating within the country.

This initiative is a core component of the broader IndiaAI Mission, which seeks to position India as a global leader in responsible AI development. By establishing clear regulatory guardrails, the government intends to mitigate risks associated with algorithmic bias, data privacy, and security, ensuring that the rapid integration of AI into public and private sectors does not compromise the fundamental rights of Indian citizens.

The guidelines are expected to serve as a blueprint for future legislative actions, with immediate focus on cross-sectoral compliance. As part of this rollout, Jammu and Kashmir is already preparing to implement 20 specific AI governance use cases across sectors like agriculture and education, supported by the upcoming MeitY Centre of Excellence at IIT Jammu, which is slated to begin operations by August 2026.
