MeitY Accelerates IndiaAI Mission With 762 Targeted Use Cases

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is aggressively scaling the IndiaAI Mission, a ₹10,371.92 crore initiative launched in March 2024. The program has already identified 762 specific AI use cases across 62 government ministries, while establishing 58 Centres of Excellence and 543 specialized Data & AI Labs to foster a robust national innovation ecosystem.

This strategic push aims to democratize artificial intelligence for MSMEs while positioning India as a global leader in responsible AI governance. By supporting 20 sovereign AI model proposals—including 12 Large Language Models and eight Small Language Models from innovators like Sarvam AI and BharatGen—the government is building a localized technological foundation that reduces reliance on foreign infrastructure.

Regulatory oversight is tightening through the 2026 IT Rules, which mandate permanent metadata labeling for synthetically generated information. As the nation moves toward a more structured AI framework, these policies will serve as the primary guardrails for developers and enterprises, ensuring that the rapid integration of AI remains secure, transparent, and aligned with national data protection standards.
