Maharashtra Hotel Bodies Seek PM's Help Over FDA Enforcement Crackdown

Major hotel and restaurant associations in Maharashtra are seeking urgent intervention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis regarding recent enforcement tactics. These industry bodies argue that the state Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is bypassing due process during its latest inspections and raids. The organizations are particularly concerned about the practice of publicizing alleged violations before formal legal trials conclude. They claim this approach causes irreparable reputational damage to established businesses without providing a fair chance for rectification or defense.

The crackdown is being led by senior IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe, who currently serves as the Maharashtra FDA chief. Mundhe is widely known for his uncompromising stance on rules and his history of 25 transfers in 20 years. Under his leadership, the FDA has intensified inspections across various establishments, ranging from high-end clubs to canteens. While the department maintains that these actions are essential for ensuring public health and food safety standards, the hospitality sector describes the current atmosphere as one of fear and harassment rather than constructive regulation.

The industry warns that an overly aggressive enforcement environment could severely impact Maharashtra's tourism and business sentiment. They are calling for a more collaborative regulatory framework that focuses on compliance assistance rather than immediate punitive measures and public shaming.
