Maharashtra Deploys Sarvam AI Indus Workspace for State Governance

Bengaluru-based startup Sarvam AI is deploying its Indus AI workspace across the Maharashtra government, with approximately 2,500 state government officials expected to utilize the platform in their daily work. The Maharashtra government has approved a two-year outlay of Rs 11.26 crore for this deployment, with the first year's cost pegged at an indicative Rs 5.63 crore. The Indus platform will enable officials to research policies and precedents, draft notes and replies, translate and summarize government documents, analyze data, and convert scanned records into searchable text.

The system is designed to support workflows across 22 Indian languages, including Marathi, and will run on infrastructure located entirely in India, ensuring government data remains within the country. This initiative is part of a broader partnership between Sarvam AI and the Maharashtra government, which will also include voice agents for citizen outreach and speech technologies for public services. Karnataka's IT Minister, Priyank M Kharge, also met with Sarvam AI to explore the use of homegrown sovereign AI technologies for governance and citizen services in the state.

As state administrations increasingly look toward localized technological adoption, the successful implementation of this workspace could pave the way for similar deployments across other Indian states before the end of the fiscal year. Stakeholders will closely monitor the operational efficiency gains achieved by the 2,500 state officials as the voice agents and translation tools are progressively rolled out for wider public service administration.
