Nine Bangladeshi Nationals Die in Kolkata Hotel Fire

A massive fire broke out at a hotel located on Free School Street in Kolkata during the early hours of August 19, 2026, claiming nine lives. All the deceased have been confirmed as Bangladeshi nationals who were visiting India. The blaze began around 2:00 a.m. IST, rapidly spreading through the corridors and trapping guests in their sleep. Rescue teams arrived shortly after the alarm was raised, but thick smoke and narrow entry points hampered initial efforts to evacuate everyone from the upper floors.

Fire department officials suspect that an air conditioner (AC) blast on one of the lower floors triggered the inferno. At least 15 guests were successfully rescued from the building, some using ladders to escape from balconies. Six other individuals sustained various degrees of burns and smoke inhalation injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. In the immediate aftermath, Kolkata Police arrested two owners of the hotel, citing gross negligence regarding mandatory fire safety protocols and insufficient emergency exits.

The tragedy has led to an urgent review of fire safety standards across the state. In the Birbhum district, administrative inspections conducted shortly after the incident identified 15 hotels operating without valid fire safety clearances. Orders have been issued to seal these properties immediately to prevent further accidents. Consular officials from Bangladesh are currently coordinating with local authorities to repatriate the remains of the victims.
