Kochi Corporation Explores Hybrid Ferries To Reduce Noise Pollution

The Kochi Municipal Corporation is evaluating the procurement of a hybrid, double-decker roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) ferry for the Vypeen-Fort Kochi route. This initiative responds to persistent citizen complaints regarding excessive noise generated by the existing fleet of diesel-powered vessels. Mayor V.K. Minimol confirmed that the project aims to introduce an eco-friendly transport alternative, preserving the acoustic environment of the Fort Kochi heritage tourism zone while improving service quality for daily commuters.

To manage the project's financial requirements, the Corporation plans to seek partial funding through the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs' Urban Challenge Fund. Municipal bonds are expected to cover 50% of the total costs. While planning for the new hybrid fleet continues, the municipality has allocated ₹5 crore for immediate noise-correction modifications to the two older vessels currently in service. These urgent dry-docking repairs prioritize engine cooling improvements and vibration damping to curb decibel levels in the interim.

The recent expansion of the fleet with a new ro-ro ferry commissioned on July 12, 2026, highlights the ongoing operational adjustments within the network. Despite these additions, the long-term management of the Vypeen–Fort Kochi service remains under review. The Corporation is actively exploring sustainable operational frameworks, including a potential transfer to Kochi Water Metro Limited or the formation of a specialized project vehicle to enhance efficiency. These structural changes seek to stabilize transit reliability while addressing local environmental concerns as tourism and commuter volume fluctuate in the coastal district.
