Kerala Enhances Security and Railway Checks for Onam Rush

Authorities in Kerala have initiated massive security and logistical operations to manage the heavy crowds during the Onam festival. In Kochi, over 1,500 police personnel are now stationed across the city to ensure public safety and order. Police have established picket points at 102 strategic locations, focusing on high-traffic areas such as shopping districts and transport hubs. Special patrol units, including 24 control room vehicles and four Pink Patrol vehicles, are active to monitor celebrations and prevent incidents in public spaces.

Simultaneously, the Railways have intensified inspections to curb the surge in ticketless travel during the festive season. The minimum penalty for traveling without a valid ticket has been doubled, rising from ₹250 to ₹500. This revised fine structure, which first took effect in June 2026, is being strictly enforced as passenger volumes peak. Official teams are conducting surprise checks across major stations and long-distance trains to manage the influx of travelers returning home for the state's primary harvest festival.

The entire city of Kochi is under continuous CCTV surveillance, with specific monitoring of bar hotels and DJ party venues to maintain decorum. Highway patrol units are also deployed to manage traffic flow and prevent accidents on arterial roads. These measures reflect the state's proactive approach to handling the unique logistical challenges posed by Onam. For residents and visitors, this means a heightened security presence and more stringent enforcement of transport regulations throughout the holiday period.
