Kerala IPS Officer Promotions Amidst Legal Scrutiny

Kerala state officials have promoted IPS officers Suresh Rajpurohit and S. Sreejith to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP) effective July 31, 2026. These elevations follow the recent retirement of Nitin Agrawal, the former head of the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services. The state currently maintains a sanctioned limit of four DGP-level posts to manage its top-tier police administration requirements.

The promotion of S. Sreejith, the current Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, remains under a cloud due to ongoing legal disputes. The Kerala High Court recently quashed a previously issued clean chit regarding unauthorized foreign travel allegations, ordering a fresh hearing by the Vigilance department within three weeks. Meanwhile, Suresh Rajpurohit remains on central deputation until January 2027, creating administrative challenges for the state government regarding his immediate placement in a cadre post.

The promotion process has become increasingly complex due to the suspension of M.R. Ajith Kumar, another prominent contender from the 1995 IPS batch. His suspension relates to allegations involving the protection of a security detail during the 2023 Nava Kerala Sadas incident. With multiple senior officers nearing retirement and facing legal or administrative hurdles, the state government faces significant pressure to finalize a stable leadership structure for the Kerala Police force while ensuring compliance with judicial directives.
