Karnataka Gruha Jyoti Scheme Verification Deadline Extended

The Karnataka Energy Department is currently conducting a door-to-door verification drive for the Gruha Jyoti scheme, which offers up to 200 units of free electricity to eligible residential households. As of July 31, 2026, approximately 82,220 households face the potential loss of benefits due to their failure to provide the mandatory documentation during the ongoing audit process. The verification aims to eliminate duplicate entries, update consumer data, and prevent scheme misuse across the state.

The verification process has encountered significant headwinds, including localized network failures and difficulties in reaching residents at their homes. In Belagavi district, for instance, only 54% of the 10 lakh registered beneficiaries had completed the verification by July 30, 2026. The state government clarified that the final deadline to submit the required documentation is August 31, 2026, putting to rest earlier public confusion regarding an alleged July 31 cutoff.

To maintain eligibility, beneficiaries must provide critical documentation including an Aadhaar card, electricity bill, and relevant proof of residence or tenancy. The state has cautioned participants to only present documents to verified ESCOM staff and explicitly warned against handing over original papers to anyone. With over 1.7 crore consumers currently enrolled, the state expects the verification completion rate to increase significantly before the August 31 deadline as officials prioritize streamlining data collection efforts.
