Kallakurichi Co-Operative Sugar Mills Begin Seasonal Crushing

Co-operative sugar mills in the Kallakurichi region of Tamil Nadu have commenced their sugarcane crushing operations for the 2026-27 season. Operations at the Kacharapalayam mill officially began on Monday, August 10, 2026, inaugurated by Collector J.E. Padmaja. This mill expects to process approximately 3.25 lakh tonnes of sugarcane harvested from nearly 11,890 acres of farmland in the surrounding area.

The expansion effort follows the earlier commencement of the Moongilthuraipattu mill on July 3, 2026, which has been operational for several weeks. With both mills contributing to the regional output, the government aims to handle a total yield exceeding 8 lakh tonnes of sugarcane across the district's vast agricultural belt. These operations serve as a vital economic engine for the local farming community, ensuring consistent demand for their harvested crops.

The Tamil Nadu government is concurrently investing in value-added infrastructure, specifically a 100 kilolitres per day (KLPD) ethanol distillery. This collaborative project involves the Kallakurichi-I, Kallakurichi-II, and Chengalrayan co-operative sugar mills. Officials have already sanctioned ₹20 lakh for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and feasibility study. This transition into ethanol production highlights the government's strategy to bolster mill profitability through diversified bio-fuel revenue streams while supporting sustainable agricultural growth in the state.
