Six Killed in Deadly Clashes Between Palestinians and Settlers in West Bank

A violent clash in the West Bank village of Tal, near Nablus, resulted in the deaths of four Palestinians and two Israelis, marking a major escalation in regional tensions. Witnesses and Fatah officials stated that fighting began when about 30 Jewish settlers entered the area and targeted Palestinian homes. As residents confronted the group, hand-to-hand fighting broke out before Israeli military forces arrived. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that soldiers were responding to reports of hikers being attacked, alleging that a security guard's weapon was seized and used against Israeli personnel. A 27-year-old soldier and a security guard were among the Israeli fatalities, while medical officials reported that three Palestinians were left in critical condition.

This incident occurs amidst a record surge in violence across the occupied West Bank since the October 7, 2023, start of the Gaza war. According to United Nations reports, over 1,114 Palestinians and 41 Israelis have been killed in the territory since the war began, with 86 Palestinian deaths recorded in 2026 alone. Community leaders described the event as a coordinated raid by settler gangs, while the Palestinian foreign ministry labeled the event a massacre, attributing the violence to the impunity granted to settlers by the Israeli government. Checkpoints surrounding Nablus remain closed, significantly restricting the movement of local residents and their access to medical care.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz held emergency security briefings, vowing to take forceful action against the perpetrators. The government has announced a series of immediate punitive measures, including the demolition of the Palestinian shooter’s home and the revocation of work permits for residents in the affected villages. Additionally, the IDF is moving to accelerate the legalization of unauthorized settler outposts and has deployed reinforcements near the settlement of Havat Gilad.
