Israel Indicts Settler for Killing of Palestinian Activist

Israeli prosecutors have filed an indictment against settler Yinon Levi for reckless manslaughter in the July 2025 death of Awdah Hathaleen. The 31-year-old teacher and community advocate was known for his opposition to settler violence and his participation in the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land. This case marks the first time an Israeli has been indicted for killing a Palestinian in the West Bank since October 7, 2023, according to B'Tselem.

The fatal confrontation occurred in the village of Umm al-Khair when settlers, including Levi, brought excavators onto private land to prepare for an illegal outpost. Reports and video footage captured by the victim suggest that Levi fired shots toward a crowd of residents during the dispute. While the accused has consistently denied firing the fatal shot, the charges against him also encompass armed trespassing and malicious property damage as part of the broader pattern of conflict.

The legal action coincides with reports of continuing settler violence, including a recent attack on August 6, 2026, in the community of Khirbet al-Tuba, where homes were burned and critical solar energy infrastructure was destroyed. Since the conflict began on October 7, 2023, rights groups state that over 1,100 Palestinians have been killed by settlers or Israeli forces in the region. Legal representatives for the victim's family view this indictment as a potential turning point for judicial accountability in the territory, though the defense intends to vigorously contest the charges.
