Ireland and West Indies Face 2027 World Cup Qualifier Path

Ireland and West Indies face the prospect of competing in the 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier under a new qualification format established by the International Cricket Council. The tournament, co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia from October 4 to November 21, 2027, will expand to a 14-team format. The revamped system introduces additional stages, including a Super Series round to decide the final direct entrants.

The 10-team World Cup Qualifier is scheduled from February 22 to March 23, 2027, with the venue yet to be finalized. The winner of the Qualifier secures direct entry into the main group stage, while the second, third, and fourth-placed teams advance to the Super Series. This playoff round determines the last available spot in the main 12-team tournament stage.

Ireland's direct qualification hopes ended after their first ODI against Afghanistan was washed out on August 5, 2026. Ranked 11th in Men's ODIs, Ireland needed a clean sweep in their five-match series against Afghanistan to secure automatic entry before the September 30 cut-off. Meanwhile, the West Indies sit 10th in the rankings and rely on results from their remaining two ODIs against India to avoid the qualifier route.
