Indonesian Ferry Fire Kills Five With Dozens Missing Near Madura Island

A massive fire aboard the passenger ferry KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2 off Indonesia's Madura island has left at least five people dead and multiple passengers missing. While local Indonesian authorities state that 41 people remain unaccounted for, Reuters reports 28 missing. The vessel was carrying 271 passengers and crew members from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi when the blaze broke out on Sunday morning. Rescuers have successfully saved 225 people so far. Many desperate survivors jumped into the sea to escape the rapidly spreading flames, prompting an urgent international rescue effort.

The disaster occurred approximately 19 nautical miles from Buruan Sapudi Island, the nearest landmass. The ship's captain managed to alert maritime authorities before the crew lost all communication. Visuals from the scene showed terrified passengers scrambling to the bow as thick black smoke engulfed the vessel. The first rescue ship to reach the scene could not pull alongside because it carried highly flammable cargo. However, other vessels, including the tugboat TB Hasnur 26 and the cargo ship British Mentor, successfully rescued passengers from the water.

Marine authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the fire. Specialised search and rescue teams continue to scour the waters off northeastern Java for the remaining missing passengers. This tragedy highlights ongoing concerns about maritime safety standards in Southeast Asia, a region heavily reliant on passenger ferries. For India, which manages extensive coastal shipping networks and ferry services, such incidents underscore the critical need for strict enforcement of maritime safety protocols.
