Flores Island Earthquake Toll Hits 53 With Thousands Displaced

A massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Flores Island, Indonesia, on August 15, 2026, resulting in at least 53 confirmed deaths and over 135 injuries. Centered 68 kilometers north-northwest of Ende at a depth of 10 kilometers, the tremor triggered local tsunami waves reaching 1.61 meters and damaged over 1,400 homes across the Sikka, Nagekeo, Manggarai, and Ende regencies. Nearly 1,000 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial impact, keeping the region in a state of high anxiety.

The disaster has displaced over 9,000 people and destroyed more than 167 public facilities, including schools and churches. Recovery efforts are severely hindered by landslides that blocked the Trans-Flores highway and severed communications in remote mountainous areas. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency has deployed naval vessels, three helicopters, and over 3,500 security personnel to reach isolated villages. Survivors continue to stay in makeshift outdoor shelters, fearful of returning to unstable structures following the persistent seismic activity.

This catastrophe ranks as the deadliest seismic event in Indonesia since 2022. While no Indian citizens were reported among the casualties, Indian disaster response agencies are closely monitoring the region. Separately, in an unrelated development in Belgium, construction workers at a former brewery site uncovered a historic cache of gold bars and coins valued at approximately 98 crore. Legal experts are currently debating ownership claims for this find, while Indonesian authorities focus their resources on the immediate humanitarian crisis and long-term reconstruction requirements for the affected provinces.
