Indian Army Inks ₹1,577 Crore Deal for 840 Kamikaze Drones

The Ministry of Defence has finalized its largest-ever contract for loiter munitions to significantly enhance the Indian Army's tactical offensive capabilities. Valued at ₹1,577 crore, the procurement involves the delivery of 840 one-way attack drones, popularly known as kamikaze drones. These sophisticated systems will be supplied by two prominent domestic firms: Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Nibe Limited. This massive order represents a strategic shift toward high-tech, low-cost autonomous warfare solutions, aligning with the government's broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision for self-reliance in the defense sector.

Loiter munitions are advanced aerial weapons that can circle a target area for extended periods before homing in on an objective with pinpoint precision. These systems allow soldiers to search for and engage enemy armor, artillery, and fortified bunkers without placing personnel in direct harm's way. The decision to invest heavily in this technology follows global observations from recent conflicts, such as the Russia-Ukraine war, where swarms of small, lethal drones have fundamentally altered battlefield dynamics.
