The government initiative sanctions 93.18 lakh GPU hours and advances sovereign foundation models to boost domestic artificial intelligence capabilities.[IndiaAI Mission Expansion]:
The Indian government is significantly expanding its sovereign AI capabilities through the IndiaAI Mission, which has an approved outlay of ₹10,371.92 crore over five years. The mission aims to establish a robust and inclusive AI ecosystem across the country. As part of this comprehensive strategy, 20 indigenous foundation model proposals, including 12 Large Multimodal Models and 8 Small Language Models, have been identified for official support, with intellectual property retained by the applicants.
[Compute Capacity Scaling]:
Additionally, 15 Compute Service Providers have been officially empaneled, and 237 distinct projects have received approval for subsidized compute support, totaling 93.18 lakh GPU hours sanctioned. A High-Performance AI Compute System of approximately 1.1 EFLOPS has also been ordered for the NIC Data Centre located in Shastri Park, Delhi. Furthermore, India has officially joined the Pax Silica coalition to help secure the global silicon supply chain against disruptions.
[Public Sector Integration]:
In a related institutional development, the Ministry of Minority Affairs is actively leveraging advanced AI and digital technologies to enhance operational efficiency and citizen-centric service delivery.
