IndiaAI Mission Backs 20 Indigenous Foundation Model Proposals

The IndiaAI Mission has officially ramped up its support for domestic artificial intelligence development by backing 20 indigenous foundation model proposals. This strategic initiative involves the allocation of over 93 lakh GPU hours to these projects, providing the necessary computational infrastructure to accelerate research and development within the country. The move is designed to foster a self-reliant AI ecosystem that addresses specific national needs while reducing dependence on foreign technology stacks.

To ensure the responsible deployment of these technologies, the government has established a comprehensive governance framework. This includes the India AI Governance Guidelines, the AI Governance and Economic Group, and a dedicated Technology and Policy Expert Committee. Furthermore, the newly formed AI Safety Institute is tasked with overseeing rigorous safety research, setting industry standards, and conducting systematic risk assessments to mitigate potential harms associated with advanced AI systems.

This multi-pronged approach aims to position India as a global leader in secure and innovative AI development. By integrating policy oversight with substantial resource allocation, the government intends to create a robust environment where indigenous models can thrive.
