IndiaAI Mission Backs 20 Indigenous AI Models To Boost Sovereign Tech

The IndiaAI Mission is actively accelerating the development of 20 indigenous Artificial Intelligence models, as confirmed by the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology. This strategic initiative encompasses 12 large language models and eight small language models, designed to build a robust, sovereign AI ecosystem within India. The program, which received a significant ₹10,371 crore outlay in March 2024, is currently scaling its infrastructure to support domestic innovation.

Notable advancements have been achieved by domestic firms including Sarvam AI, Gnani.AI, BharatGen, and Avataar AI, which are developing specialized models ranging from multilingual foundation systems to advanced video generation tools. To facilitate this growth, the mission has successfully empanelled 15 compute service providers and approved 237 distinct projects. These efforts are supported by the allocation of 9.3 million Graphics Processing Unit hours to startups and academic researchers.

By fostering these indigenous capabilities, the government aims to reduce reliance on foreign technology stacks while positioning India as a global leader in AI research. The mission is structured to provide the necessary compute power and collaborative framework required for long-term technological independence. These developments are expected to catalyze a new wave of high-tech entrepreneurship and academic excellence across the country over the next five years.
