India Marks AI Appreciation Day With Mandatory AI Literacy in Schools

India is observing AI Appreciation Day on July 16, highlighting the rapid integration of artificial intelligence into the national education system. This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, which prioritizes technological literacy as a core component of the modern Indian academic experience for students across the country.

The Central Board of Secondary Education has officially mandated Artificial Intelligence and Computational Thinking as compulsory subjects for students from Class 3 to 8, starting with the 2026-27 academic year. This policy shift aims to prepare the next generation for a digital-first economy by embedding foundational AI concepts directly into the primary and middle school curriculum.

Leading universities are currently redesigning their academic ecosystems to incorporate AI into teaching, research, and governance.
