India Highlights Maritime Growth Amid Global Trade Scrutiny

India is preparing to showcase its significant maritime development at SMM Hamburg 2026 in September. A delegation led by Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways officials will present the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision, which aims to elevate India into one of the top five shipbuilding nations by 2045. The initiative focuses on enhancing port capacity and infrastructure to 10,000 MTPA while emphasizing sustainability and digitalization.

Simultaneously, the government is addressing international trade concerns after a US report flagged potential transshipment risks involving Chinese goods. The White House report identifies India among countries allegedly involved in rerouting Chinese products to evade tariffs, prompting the US Trade Representative’s office to introduce stricter anti-transshipment clauses in trade negotiations. Amid these external pressures, India has announced a major ₹1 lakh crore tender for 60 Medium Transport Aircraft to modernize its Air Force, signaling a commitment to domestic defense manufacturing via the Make in India initiative.

India's merchandise exports saw a 20% surge in July 2026 to $44.24 billion, driven by strength in engineering goods and electronics. However, the trade deficit reached a six-month high of $31.98 billion, with imports growing at a faster rate due to increased crude oil shipments. While the recovery of exports to West Asian markets and the US has provided some stability, the widening trade gap remains a critical area of focus for economic policy in the current fiscal year.
