India Expands EV Charging Network With Over 4,800 New Fast Chargers Approved

The Union Ministry of Heavy Industries has approved an allocation of Rs 503.86 crore to deploy 4,874 new EV chargers across India. This initiative, part of the PM E-DRIVE framework, focuses on establishing DC fast chargers to support the growing electric vehicle population. The government aims to facilitate the installation of 72,300 public charging stations by March 2028, providing substantial subsidies for upstream electrical infrastructure.

The expansion is driven by the need to alleviate range anxiety and support the mass adoption of electric vehicles. Hyundai Motor India has also stepped up, integrating access to over 30,000 charging points through its myHyundai app. By partnering with multiple Charge Point Operators, Hyundai is creating a unified ecosystem that benefits all EV owners, regardless of their vehicle brand, which is a critical step toward standardizing the charging experience.

Private players like Relux Electric are also contributing, with plans to commission 20 hyper-charging stations along major intercity corridors like Delhi-Mumbai and Bengaluru-Chennai within eight months. As these networks expand, the focus will shift toward ensuring reliability and interoperability. EV owners should expect a more seamless charging experience as these infrastructure projects come online over the next few years.
