India's Data Center Capacity Surges 59% Amidst Rising AI Demand

India's data center market has experienced substantial growth in the first half of 2026, with new capacity additions surging by 59.3% year-on-year to 258 MW IT. This expansion brings the country's total operational stock to 1.8 GW IT. The rapid growth is primarily attributed to increasing digital adoption, the rising demand for cloud services, and the intensive computational requirements of new AI-related workloads.

Projections indicate that India's data center capacity could reach 3-3.6 GW by 2030. Hyperscalers such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and Google are expected to drive approximately 90% of this demand, underscoring the critical role of global tech giants in shaping India's digital infrastructure. This massive investment is not only about hardware but also about creating a foundation for the next wave of AI-driven economic growth.

Beyond the technology sector, this infrastructure expansion is anticipated to create around 433,000 jobs by 2030. The development of data centers is stimulating broader economic activity, including construction, power supply, and specialized technical services. As India positions itself as a global hub for digital services, the continued build-out of this capacity remains a cornerstone of the nation's long-term economic and technological strategy.
