India Data Center Capacity Hits 1.8 GW Amidst Massive AI Demand

India's data center infrastructure is undergoing a rapid expansion, with total operational capacity reaching 1.8 GW IT in the first half of 2026. This growth, marked by the addition of 258 MW IT in just six months, represents a significant 59.3% year-on-year increase compared to the same period in 2025, signaling a robust shift in the nation's digital backbone.

The primary driver behind this infrastructure boom is the escalating demand from hyperscalers and emerging AI-focused cloud providers. As companies like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and Google scale their operations, the requirement for hosting large language models and neo-cloud services has intensified, forcing a massive build-out of high-density facilities across key Indian metropolitan hubs.

Looking ahead, the dominance of hyperscalers is expected to grow, with these entities projected to account for approximately 90% of total data center demand by 2030. This transition from the current 60% share underscores the critical role that AI-driven cloud computing will play in shaping India's digital economy over the next four years, necessitating sustained investment in power and connectivity.
