India Curtails 8,133 GWh of Solar Power Amid Grid Bottlenecks

India wasted 11% of its total solar power generation during the recent record-breaking summer season, amounting to a loss of 8,133 gigawatt-hours. Despite the surge in national power demand, transmission infrastructure struggled to absorb the excess electricity produced during peak sunshine hours. This phenomenon highlights a significant mismatch between solar generation capacity and the grid's current transmission throughput capabilities.

The inability to manage this surplus stems from persistent bottlenecks in the power transmission network. While renewable energy capacity expansion remains a priority, the grid's capacity to transport that energy from solar-rich regions to load centers has not kept pace. This mismatch force-stopped utility-scale projects from feeding electricity into the network, as system operators prioritized grid stability over total generation uptake during the sweltering heat waves.

Addressing these infrastructure gaps is crucial for the country’s ambitious renewable energy targets. Immediate upgrades to transmission corridors and the integration of large-scale battery storage solutions are necessary to prevent such substantial energy waste in the future. The government faces mounting pressure to accelerate grid investments to ensure that renewable assets remain commercially viable and contribute effectively to India's energy transition goals.
