India Auto Retail Sales Surge 21 Percent in June Driven by SUVs

India's automobile sector demonstrated strong performance in June 2026 and the first quarter of the fiscal year 2027. Retail automobile sales, based on new registrations, reached 2,557,234 units in June 2026, marking a 21.83 percent year-on-year increase, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association on Monday, July 6.

Passenger car retail sales surged by 28.63 percent to 410,843 units, while two-wheeler sales grew 21.22 percent to 1,828,458 units. Commercial vehicle retail sales also saw an increase of 16.88 percent, totaling 90,972 units. Wholesale figures for Q1 FY27 hit record highs, with passenger vehicles posting 1.27 million units, a 25.9 percent growth over Q1 FY26 as reported by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

Utility Vehicles continued to dominate the passenger vehicle segment, accounting for approximately 68 percent of sales and registering a 28.6 percent growth. Market leader Maruti Suzuki India Ltd reported wholesales of 200,390 units in June 2026, a 19 percent increase year-on-year. Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra also posted stellar quarterly and monthly gains across their SUV and EV portfolios.
