India And Wellcome Trust Launch Phase III Biomedical Research Fund

The Government of India has formally launched Phase III of the Biomedical Research Career Programme, backed by a financial commitment of approximately INR 1,500 crore. Initiated to strengthen indigenous biomedical innovation, the program is co-funded by the Department of Biotechnology with approximately INR 1,000 crore and the UK-based Wellcome Trust contributing approximately INR 500 crore. This collaborative initiative aims to cultivate scientific talent and fund advanced clinical research across national laboratories.

The funding framework focuses on supporting early- and mid-career researchers pursuing breakthrough solutions in infectious diseases, genomics, and therapeutic development. By partnering with the Wellcome Trust, Indian research institutions gain access to global peer-review networks and collaborative funding grants. Officials emphasized that this phase will prioritize translational research that directly addresses domestic public health challenges.

Program administrators will utilize the capital injection to upgrade laboratory instrumentation, establish specialized research chairs, and expand fellowship opportunities for top-tier scientists. The program builds upon previous phases that successfully nurtured independent research groups across India. Stakeholders anticipate that the initiative will accelerate domestic vaccine development and advanced diagnostic manufacturing over the coming decade.
