Aviation Sector Trails As First Services Production Index Released

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) recently introduced India's first trial Index of Services Production (ISP), providing a comprehensive monthly measure of activity across 19 major sub-sectors. While the majority of these sub-sectors registered strong double-digit growth in April 2026, the air transport sector emerged as the primary laggard. The sector reported a sharp 13.9 percent year-on-year contraction, standing in stark contrast to the robust performance seen across other services industries.

Aviation experts attribute this decline to a specific confluence of external pressures rather than inherent structural weaknesses. High Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) costs, driven by ongoing geopolitical instability in West Asia, have forced airlines to raise airfares. This, in turn, has depressed passenger demand. Aviation consultant Parvez Damania emphasized that the industry is caught in a cycle of rising fuel costs and necessary fare hikes, which effectively discourages travelers. Additionally, Captain Kishore Chinta noted that the slowdown in aircraft induction and route optimization has further pressured the sector's performance.

Despite the April contraction, the index provides a long-awaited analytical framework for the services economy, which accounts for approximately 60 percent of India's output. Analysts maintain a cautious but hopeful outlook, suggesting that the aviation sector remains highly sensitive to fuel price fluctuations and external shocks. They believe that once geopolitical tensions ease and fuel prices stabilize, the industry is well-positioned for recovery. Future ISP updates will aim to improve coverage and stability, offering a clearer picture of India's evolving services landscape.
