CWG 2026: Gulveer Singh Wins Historic Silver in 10,000m

Indian runner Gulveer Singh secured a historic silver medal in the men’s 10,000m race at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This performance marks the first time an Indian athlete has reached the podium in this specific long-distance event at the CWG. Singh maintained a steady pace throughout the race, surging in the final laps to clinch second place. His achievement adds a significant milestone to India’s track and field history, following his previous success as an Asian Games bronze medalist.

Weightlifter Harjinder Kaur and high jumper Sarvesh Kushare continued India’s medal rush by securing silver medals in their respective disciplines. Kaur competed in the women’s 69kg category, lifting a combined total of 227kg, including a 126kg lift in the clean and jerk segment. In the men’s high jump, Sarvesh Kushare cleared a height of 2.25 metres on his third attempt to take second place. Kushare received tactical advice during the event from teammate Tejaswin Shankar, who supported his compatriots from the sidelines after retiring due to injury.

India’s boxing contingent delivered strong performances as Priya Ghanghas, Preeti Pawar, and Jadumani Singh advanced to the semifinals, assuring themselves of medals. Ghanghas defeated home favorite Niamh Mitchell in a high-intensity bout to silence the local Glasgow crowd. Looking ahead to Day 7, six Indian boxers have the opportunity to secure their spots in final matches. Additionally, the focus shifts to athletics where Murali Sreeshankar and Lokesh Satyanathan will compete in the men’s long jump final.
