Government Mandates Strict Data Localization For Telecom Infrastructure Providers

The Indian government has issued new regulations under the Telecommunications (Authorisation for Telecommunication Network) Rules, 2026, mandating that all data generated by communication infrastructure providers must be stored exclusively within India. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has stipulated that no copies of logs, data, or network information can be routed or shared outside the country.

This policy is aimed at fortifying national digital infrastructure security. By ensuring that sensitive telecom data remains within domestic borders, the government seeks to mitigate risks associated with unauthorized access or foreign surveillance. The rules apply to a wide range of entities, including those operating cloud-based networks, mobile towers, and satellite gateways, effectively closing potential loopholes in the national data protection framework.
