Government Allocates ₹689 Crore For 6,562 EV Chargers Under PM E-DRIVE

The central government's PM E-DRIVE scheme is actively driving the transition to electric mobility with a substantial total outlay of ₹10,900 crore. This initiative is designed to foster a comprehensive EV ecosystem, focusing on the rapid deployment of public charging stations and providing demand-side incentives to lower the cost of ownership for electric buses across the country.

As of July 1, 2026, the government has approved ₹689 crore specifically for the installation of 6,562 electric vehicle public charging stations (EVPCS). These chargers are being distributed strategically among three major Oil Marketing Companies and nine states, ensuring that the infrastructure rollout is geographically diverse and supports the growing number of electric vehicles on Indian roads.

The scheme provides tiered demand incentives for e-buses based on their length, offering ₹35,00,000 for buses between 10m and 12m, ₹25,00,000 for those between 8m and 10m, and ₹20,00,000 for buses between 6m and 8m. By subsidizing both the vehicles and the charging infrastructure, the government aims to significantly reduce the nation's dependence on fossil fuels and establish a sustainable manufacturing ecosystem.
