Google Launches Selfie Video Verification for Account Recovery

Google is deploying a new security layer allowing users to use short selfie videos for identity verification during sign-in and account recovery. This feature aims to help users who lose access to standard recovery options, such as backup codes or secondary devices. By requiring a live video, the system ensures that a real person is attempting to access the account before unlocking sensitive services.

Users must pre-configure this option while they still have account access by recording a video of their face from multiple angles within the Google app's security settings. The process involves removing accessories like sunglasses or masks to ensure facial features remain visible for processing. While the system uses biometric data to verify identity, the feature is currently restricted and unavailable for Workspace accounts or those enrolled in the Advanced Protection Program.

The feature is entering a gradual rollout phase across various regions and device types, including India. For the Indian digital landscape, this adds a critical layer of protection as mobile-first account management becomes the national norm. It reduces reliance on SMS-based two-factor authentication, which is often vulnerable to SIM-swapping and other sophisticated cyberattacks prevalent in the region.
