Google Expands AI Research Foundations And Teacher Training Initiatives In India

Google announced a series of strategic AI education and skilling initiatives at Google I/O Connect India 2026 in Bengaluru. The company is introducing a 56-hour AI Research Foundations curriculum, developed by Google DeepMind in partnership with NASSCOM and the Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru. This program aims to provide advanced training in building and fine-tuning large language models for Indian learners.

These initiatives are designed to bridge the gap between theoretical AI knowledge and practical application. By leveraging the Gemini-powered ATL Saathi application, Google is providing teachers with a 24/7 training assistant. This tool is currently being piloted in 100 schools, with a long-term vision to transform Atal Tinkering Labs into AI-Augmented Discovery Labs, ensuring that educators have the necessary support to guide students through complex technological landscapes.

The long-term objective is to scale the ATL Saathi program to 10,000 schools across the country. This expansion will significantly enhance the quality of AI research and teaching infrastructure in India. As these programs gain momentum, the collaboration between global tech giants and Indian academic institutions will likely set a new benchmark for AI-driven pedagogical development in the region.
